Start a product

This guide creates a product and its hub. You will:

  • Run kiln new
  • Write what you already know in context/
  • Give intake the first work

#Run the command

Run this in the folder that should hold the two repositories.

kiln new acme

It asks each thing that it needs to know.

✓ Use AdonisJS? Yes
✓ Do you need a monorepo? No
✓ Select the kind of app you want to create? React app (using Inertia)

The kinds of app are the starter kits of AdonisJS: Hypermedia, React, Vue and API. When you need a monorepo, Kiln uses its API monorepo kit. See Monorepos.

With AdonisJS, Kiln creates the app, installs the newest Flow harness, runs lint, types and tests, and pushes it. It then connects CI and the Flow review, when you set them up. With no AdonisJS, acme is an empty repository, with a CLAUDE.md for you to write its checks in.

Then it creates the hub, and opens a Factory tab for it in Herdr.

  • acme/The code
  • acme-hub/Run the agents here
    • CLAUDE.md
    • factory.json
    • mars.yaml
    • context/
    • explorations/
    • inbox.md
    • tasks/
    • repos/acme/

To run it with no prompts, pass each answer. It stops and names any answer that is missing. Commands gives each option.

kiln new acme --adonisjs --kit react --owner acme-org

#Write what you know

context/ starts empty. Write what you already know about the product in the hub, then commit it and push it. Each session reads these files, and intake checks new work against them.

context/positioning.md has four headings: who it is for, the problem, what it replaces, and what it is not. context/non-goals.md holds what the product does not do. context/glossary.md holds one word for each thing.

You do not need to fill them. The rest comes from the work: accept writes what future tasks must know. See Context.

#Give intake the first work

Press New in the panel, and give intake one input. It can be an idea, a bug report, a maintenance job or a quality problem. intake turns it into change tasks, into an exploration, or into one line in the inbox.

Your first task takes one change through the factory.
